AVOID THE USE OF ALCOHOL 24 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE

Diabetic Patients:

  1. If taking oral medications, stop your oral diabetic medications when you change your diet to clear liquids
  2. If taking insulin:
    1. If on long-acting insulin, cut your long-acting insulin in half when changing your diet to clear liquid.
    2. If on short-acting insulin, use a sliding scale when changing your diet to clear liquids
    3. If using an insulin pump, manage as usual

At least 3 days prior to the procedure:

1. Please be sure your check your email (and spam folders) for a message with a link to our online patient portal. Follow the instructions in this email to complete your patient health history. This step is essential in order for us to ensure excellent care. If you do not have access to the internet, a nurse will be calling you a few days prior to your procedure to go over your health history.

2. If you have a new medical diagnosis or become ill between now and your scheduled procedure, please call us so we can evaluate a possible need to reschedule.

3. If you start antibiotics and will be on them at time of procedure please call to reschedule your appointment. Your procedure will not be able to be performed if you are taking an antibiotic.

The day before the procedure

  1. No solid food to eat after 6:00 pm. You may have a small amount of clear liquid up to 3 hours prior to your EGD.
  2. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your procedure.

The day of the procedure

  1. You may have a small amount of clear liquid up to 3 hours prior to your EGD. Acceptable clear liquids are chicken broth, apple juice, coffee/tea (no cream), Jell-O (no red, orange or purple).
  2. Three (3) hours before your procedure STOP DRINKING ALL LIQUIDS. Do not chew gum or suck on hard candy.
  3. Take any essential medications such as heart, blood pressure, asthma, or seizure medications as usual
  4. If you use an inhaler daily, please use it the morning of your procedure and bring it with you to the procedure.
  5. You will need to arrange for a ride home after the procedure from a friend or family member. We do not allow rides from public transportation due to concerns for your safety.

Please bring the following:

1. Insurance Cards and Photo ID
2. Medication List
3. A DESIGNATED DRIVER: You will need to arrange for a ride home after the procedure from a friend or family member. We do not allow rides from public transportation or ride services for your safety

**WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU LEAVE ALL VALUABLES AT HOME**
