** Following these instructions correctly will help your colonoscopy prep and procedure go smoothly**
SUFLAVE® (polyethylene glycol 3350, sodium sulfate, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and sodium chloride for oral solution) is an osmotic laxative indicated for cleansing of the colon in preparation for colonoscopy in adults.

At least 7 business days before the procedure
1. Complete your health history. Be sure your check your email (and spam folders) for a message with a link to our online patient portal. Follow the instructions in this email to complete your patient health history. This step is essential in order for us to ensure excellent care. If you do not have access to the internet, a nurse will be calling you to go over your health history. Please have the following ready: a list of current medications, your surgical history and family history.
2. Please pick up your SUFLAVE prep kit at designated pharmacy.
3. Purchase Miralax or the generic Polyethylene Glycol 3350 in a 8.3oz or larger bottle. This is over the counter and usually available at all pharmacies.
4. If you have a new medical diagnosis or become ill between now and your scheduled procedure, please call us so we can evaluate a possible need to reschedule.
5. If you start antibiotics and will be on them at time of procedure please call to reschedule your appointment. Your procedure will not be able to be performed if you are taking an antibiotic.
6 days before the procedure
- Start Miralax or the generic Polyethylene Glycol 3350
- Take 1 dose twice a day for 5 days, then stop on the day your prep begins
- Start a low residue diet.
The day before the procedure
What You CAN Do
- You may have a low residue breakfast and lunch no later than 1:00pm (low residue diet)
- You may have clear liquids (follow a CLEAR LIQUID DIET)
What You CANNOT Do
- Do not drink milk or eat or drink anything colored red, orange or purple
- Do not drink alcohol
- Do not take other laxatives while taking SUFLAVE
- Do not take oral medications within 1 hour of starting each dose of SUFLAVE
- If taking tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics, iron, digoxin, chlorpromazine, or penicillamine, take these medications at least 2 hours before and not less than 6 hours after administration of each dose of SUFLAVE.
Liquids That Are OK to Drink
- Coffee or tea (no cream or nondairy creamer)
- Fruit juices (without pulp)
- Gelatin desserts (no fruit or topping) (no red, purple, or orange)
- Water
- Powerade or Gatorade (no red, purple, or orange)
- Chicken broth
- Clear soda (such as ginger ale, Sprite or 7-Up)

The Dosing Regimen
SUFLAVE is a split-dose (2-day) regimen. A total of 2 bottles are required for complete preparation for colonoscopy. You will take 2 bottles of liquid in 2 separate doses. One dose of SUFLAVE is equal to one bottle plus one flavor enhancing packet.
DOSE 1 – On the Day Prior to Colonoscopy
You may eat a low residue breakfast and lunch
STEP 1 At 1:00 PM start a clear liquid diet and remain on clear liquids until 2 hours before your procedure.
Diabetic patients:
- If taking oral medications, stop your oral diabetic medications when you change your diet to clear liquids
- If taking insulin:
- If on long-acting insulin, cut your long-acting insulin in half when changing your diet to clear liquid.
- If on short-acting insult, use a sliding scale when changing your diet to clear liquids
- If using an insulin pump, manage as usual
STEP 2 At 5:00 PM open 1 flavor enhancing packet and pour the contents into 1 bottle.
STEP 3 Fill the provided bottle with lukewarm water up to the fill line. After capping the bottle, gently shake the bottle until all powder has mixed well (dissolved). For best taste, refrigerate the solution for an hour before drinking. Do not freeze.

IMPORTANT: If you experience preparation-related symptoms (for example, nausea, bloating, or cramping), pause or slow the rate of drinking the solution until your symptoms diminish.
STEP 3 Drink 8 ounces of the solution every 15 minutes until the bottle is empty.
STEP 4 Drink AT LEAST and additional 16 ounces of water during the evening.
On the day of the procedure
DOSE 2 – Day of the Colonoscopy
- The morning of the colonoscopy, five (5) hours prior to the colonoscopy plus driving time, repeat STEP 1 to STEP 3 from DOSE 1 Instructions above
- Step 2 Drink an additional 16 ounces of water during the morning.
- STOP drinking all fluids 2 hours before you travel. Do not chew gum or suck on hard candy.
- Take any essential medications such as heart, blood pressure, anxiety, asthma, or seizure meds as usual 1 hour before either dose. If you use an inhaler daily, please use it the morning of the procedure and bring it with you to the procedure.

IMPORTANT: You must complete all SUFLAVE liquid and required water at least 2 hours before colonoscopy.
**YOU MUST BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU TO DRIVE YOU HOME AFTER THE PROCEDURE**
